Trading Controller (Buyer)
Location: Scunthorpe, Permanent/full time
Salary: £45k plus pa (depending on skills/experience) + car allowance + benefits
Job Purpose: To be responsible for developing effective supplier relationships, sourcing a range of products to meet the company's financial and marketing strategies and creating benefits for our members.
Reports to: Business Manager

Key Result Areas:
* Management of price file and development of category range.
* Construction and implementation of appropriate and competitive promotional plans.
* Maximisation of sales value, margin and supplier income.
* Achieve availability and supplier service level targets.
* Effectively manage a team of assistant buyers / assistants as appropriate.

Job Knowledge
* Strong retail, supplier and market place knowledge of the business area / category.
* Proven buying and negotiation experience in the relevant category.
* Good knowledge of the products within the category.
* Sound understanding of the principles of category management.
* Knowledge and understanding of trading initiatives and general regulations governing commercial activities.

Specific Areas of Work:
* Manage the trading performance of the category, including maximising sales growth, margin, profit and product availability.
* Select and source products and ranges to deliver member promises in terms of value and service.
* Develop and execute a full category promotional programme to deliver sales growth for members and the company.
* Work closely with field teams to ensure full implementation and participation of trading initiatives by members at store.
* Maintain accurate price files for designated product categories.
* Conduct supplier negotiations to deliver products and promotions that are competitively priced for our members and meet income targets.
* Proactively manage supplier relationships to identify areas where greater savings or business advantage could be made.
* Accurately forecast category promotions and liaise with stock controllers to ensure maximisation of service level to members.
* Review range and pricing policy of product portfolio to ensure that remains competitive.
* Monitor and evaluate performance against budget/forecast, including sales value, volume and profits.
* Complete regular store visits and demonstrate understanding of store operations and member needs.
* Lead, motivate and develop direct reports to ensure that the highest level of service is provided to members at all times.
* Work cross functionally across the business to ensure the category plan is the best for our members; Share information and develop effective working relationships.
* Keep abreast of retail trends, competitor activities and member requirements at all times.
* Ensure compliance with EC and UK Competition regulations.

Job Skills and Competencies

Commercial Acumen
* 5+ year's relevant retail buying experience.
* Proven track record of results delivery and achieving financial targets.
* Strong negotiation and influencing skills; able to close deals.
* Strong customer and market focus.
* Good understanding of all Microsoft applications.

Leadership & Coaching
* People management experience.
* Ability to engage direct reports to deliver the plan with effective communication, clear goals and individual targets and objectives.
* Ability to recruit, develop and address and any performance issues within the team to enable delivery of the plan.
* Ability to coach and support individuals with their personal and professional development.
